Jarrod Moore Coaching Clinic: January 2025

McKinnon Basketball was fortunate to have Basketball NSW’s Coach Development Manager, Jarrod Moore deliver a coaching clinic for 65 coaches in January 2025.

The topic was “Skill Development for U12s and U14s”, with Jarrod leading an U12 team through a series of activities to develop shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork, defence, and decision-making in a fun 45-minute session.

Drill #1 - Warm Up: Skill Triangles - 10 mins

  • Game 1 - Run Tag: Body warm up & fundamental body movements

  • Game 2 - Passing Tag: Technical observations:

  • - Jump stop to catch

  • - Balanced catches and passes

  • - Step to pass

  • - Universal follow-through: “Lock n Snap”

  • - Ball protection & toughness

  • - “Firm, flat, focused”

  • Game 3 - Pass Cut Replace Triangles

  • Game 4 - Triangle ‘Interceptor’

Drill #2 - 7 Cone Ball-Handling & Finishing - 10 mins

  • Ball-handling combinations: Front, between, back, combination, onside dribbles

  • Finishing combinations: First step, overhead, finger-roll, floaters, euros, 2 foot game.

  • Ball Protection combinations: fakes, hugs, keep aways, tiny dribbles, big dribbles

  • Teaching points: acceleration/deceleration, eyes, ball toughness, stance.

  • Can be progressed to 1v1 or 2v1 (shooter becomes Defence)

Drill #4 - Finishing/Shooting Decision Making 1 v 1 - 10 mins

  • 2 teams, all with basketballs and 1 tennis ball.

  • Play a halfcourt game of basketball, trying to score using the tennis ball whilst dribbling your basketball.

  • Adjust rules accordingly: simplify to have players carry the basketball, or extend them to use ‘tiny’ dribbles or ‘purposeful pound’ dribbles, or challenge players to dribble with weak hand.
