Cougars Split Results During FightMND Big Freeze Round
The McKinnon Cougars split their four Big V fixtures across the FightMND Big Freeze Round, recording two wins and two losses across the weekend.
The Championship Women continued their strong form with a dominant road victory over Warrnambool, while the Championship Men secured an important home win over Melbourne University. The Youth League One Men were narrowly defeated in overtime after leading late against Melbourne University, while the Youth Championship Women fell to Waverley on Sunday afternoon.
SATURDAY
YOUTH LEAGUE ONE MEN – McKinnon Cougars (79) defeated by Melbourne University (82) OT
The Youth League One Men suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to Melbourne University despite controlling much of the contest at GESAC.
McKinnon built a one-point lead at quarter time before extending the margin to nine points at the main break. The Cougars maintained their advantage throughout the third term and entered the final quarter leading by eight points.
Melbourne University gradually worked its way back into the game during the fourth quarter before forcing overtime. Despite remaining in the contest throughout the extra period, McKinnon was unable to find the decisive baskets as the visitors escaped with a three-point victory.
Jun Lee led the Cougars with 20 points, while Jake Ansell added 15 points and 8 rebounds. Oliver Mann recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Thomas D'Amelio contributed 11 rebounds.
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (122) defeated Warrnambool Mermaids (45)
The Championship Women produced one of their most dominant performances of the season, overwhelming Warrnambool by 77 points on the road.
McKinnon wasted no time asserting control, racing to a 19-point quarter-time lead before extending the margin to 45 points by halftime. The Cougars continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, winning every quarter and eclipsing the 120-point mark in a complete team performance.
The visitors shot nearly 55 per cent from the field and knocked down 17 three-pointers as they improved their position at the top of the Championship Women standings.
Maighan Hedge led the way with 23 points, including six three-pointers, while Amy Baum contributed 18 points and 8 assists. Zoe Johnson added 17 points, Javyn Nicholson finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Sarae Beveridge chipped in with 13 points.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (91) defeated Melbourne University (78)
The Championship Men completed a successful Saturday night for the Cougars with a 13-point victory over Melbourne University at GESAC.
McKinnon held a five-point lead at quarter time before Melbourne University briefly reduced the margin during the second period. The Cougars responded after halftime, winning the third quarter by eight points to regain control before closing out the contest strongly in the final term.
Strong offensive balance proved the difference, with five players reaching double figures as McKinnon secured an important home victory.
Troyce Manassa starred with 26 points and 7 rebounds, while Mitchell Barry added 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Josh McQueen contributed 14 points, Josh Uhr-Henry finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Kelsey Espeut added 10 points.
SUNDAY
YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (63) defeated by Waverley Falcons (84)
The Youth Championship Women were unable to finish the weekend on a winning note, falling to Waverley at home.
The Falcons made a strong start and led by six points at quarter time before extending their advantage to 14 points by halftime. McKinnon continued to compete throughout the second half but was unable to slow Waverley's efficient offensive performance as the visitors claimed the 21-point victory.
Arden Bailey led the Cougars with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Zoe Johnson added 14 points and 7 rebounds. Maddison Carr contributed 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, and Eloise Leonard finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists.
