Cougars Split Results in Four-Game Home Stand

The McKinnon Cougars returned to GESAC for a four-game home stand across the weekend, with the Youth and Championship Women continuing their strong form while both men’s sides were tested in Sunday matchups.

Saturday delivered a pair of convincing wins to open the round, before Sunday featured two tough contests, including an overtime thriller. The weekend also marked milestone moments, with Nate Raymond bringing up his 100th Big V game and Mitch Barry scoring his 2000th Big V point.

SATURDAY

YOUTH WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (90) defeated Pakenham Warriors (65)

The Youth Women opened the weekend with a strong 25-point win over Pakenham, controlling the game from the outset and setting the tone early at GESAC.

Arden Bailey led the charge with 24 points and 10 rebounds, continuing her standout form across the opening rounds. Kayla Welsh added 17 points and 11 rebounds in another commanding performance, while Eloise Leonard contributed 13 points and 6 assists, helping drive the offence.

McKinnon’s defensive pressure created consistent scoring opportunities, particularly through the first half, and their ability to maintain intensity across all four quarters ensured the margin continued to grow.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (105) defeated Western Port (73)

The Championship Women followed with another dominant performance, securing a 32-point win over Western Port in a game they controlled from start to finish.

Maighan Hegde led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds, setting the tone offensively, while Emily Suckling added 18 points on 70 percent shooting in another efficient display. Jennie Rintala anchored the interior with 13 points and 10 rebounds, providing a strong presence on both ends.

McKinnon won every quarter and consistently generated high-quality looks, with their depth again on display as they wore down Western Port with sustained pressure and balanced scoring.

SUNDAY

YOUTH MEN – McKinnon Cougars (78) lost to Sunbury Jets (103)

The Youth Men faced a tough matchup against Sunbury, falling by 25 points despite a strong offensive showing from key contributors.

Oliver Mann led the way with 31 points on 64 percent shooting, adding 5 rebounds in an efficient scoring performance. Oliver Ledger contributed 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Charlie Watts added 8 points and 3 rebounds.

McKinnon showed patches of strong ball movement and scoring, but Sunbury’s ability to string together runs through the second and third quarters proved decisive, creating a gap that the Cougars were unable to close.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (100) lost to RMIT (103) OT

The Championship Men closed the weekend with a narrow overtime loss in a highly competitive contest against RMIT, in one of the most tightly contested games of the round.

Troyce Manassa, Mitchell Barry and Kierell Green all finished with 20 points, with Manassa adding 9 rebounds and 5 assists in a strong all-round performance. Green recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Barry contributed 9 assists to go with his scoring output.

The Cougars showed resilience to fight back and force overtime after a back-and-forth fourth quarter, but RMIT were able to execute late in the extra period to edge ahead in a game that could have gone either way.
