Five Wins Highlight Strong Weekend for McKinnon Cougars

The McKinnon Cougars enjoyed a successful weekend across Big V competition, recording five wins from six matches as the club continued its strong form across multiple divisions.

The Championship Women delivered another dominant performance, the Championship Men secured a thrilling one-point road win, while the Victorian Women completed a perfect weekend with victories over Casey and Nunawading. The Youth Men also enjoyed a strong weekend, recording a convincing home victory over Bulleen before narrowly falling to Sunbury on Sunday.

The weekend also featured a pair of milestones, with Zoe Johnson and Evie Haywood both recognised for reaching 50 Big V games with McKinnon.

SATURDAY

VICTORIAN WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (70) defeated Casey Cavaliers (61)

The Victorian Women opened the weekend with a hard-fought nine-point victory over Casey at GESAC.

In a tightly contested opening half, neither side was able to create significant separation. McKinnon held a narrow advantage at quarter time before Casey responded during the second term to briefly edge ahead heading into the main break.

The Cougars produced their best basketball of the game after halftime, holding Casey to just nine third-quarter points while finding greater offensive rhythm at the other end. That defensive effort allowed McKinnon to establish valuable breathing room before controlling the final quarter to secure an important home victory.

Arden Bailey led the way with 27 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 9-of-16 from the field and hitting four three-pointers. Zoe Johnson added 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Kayla Welsh contributed 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Maddison Carr finished with 8 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

YOUTH MEN – McKinnon Cougars (95) defeated Bulleen Boomers (69)

The Youth League One Men produced one of their most complete performances of the season with a commanding 26-point victory over Bulleen at GESAC.

McKinnon came out firing from the opening tip, pouring in 36 first-quarter points and quickly taking control of the contest. The Cougars continued to push the tempo throughout the second term and entered halftime holding a commanding 59-28 advantage.

While Bulleen improved after the break, McKinnon never allowed the visitors back into the game, maintaining control throughout the second half to secure an impressive home victory.

Thomas Darcy led the way with 16 points and 5 assists as McKinnon spread the scoring load. Charlie Watts added 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Oliver Mann contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds. Viv Anderson-Francois finished with 9 points and Jun Lee added 7 points.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (100) defeated Hume City Broncos (49)

The Championship Women delivered a dominant road performance on Saturday night, defeating Hume City by 51 points at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium.

McKinnon set the tone immediately, scoring 26 first-quarter points while limiting the Broncos to just 13. The visitors continued to build their advantage throughout the second quarter before taking complete control after halftime.

The Cougars won every quarter and showcased their depth on both ends of the floor, reaching the century mark while holding Hume City to just 49 points. Their defensive pressure consistently created scoring opportunities and ensured the result was never in doubt.

Javyn Nicholson led the way with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists in another dominant display. Maighan Hedge added 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals, while Katherine Vaile contributed 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Jennie Rintala and Eloise Leonard each finished with 13 points.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (72) defeated Hume City Broncos (71)

The Championship Men secured a thrilling one-point victory over Hume City in a contest that went right down to the final possession.

McKinnon made an outstanding start, racing to a 26-11 lead at quarter time behind strong defensive pressure and efficient offensive execution. The Cougars continued to hold the advantage through the second quarter and entered halftime with control of the contest.

Hume City responded after the break, gradually reducing the margin and applying pressure throughout the second half. The Broncos won both the third and fourth quarters and had opportunities late, but McKinnon came up with several crucial defensive stops in the closing moments to hold on for the win.

Josh McQueen starred with 28 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals while shooting 11-of-18 from the field. Troyce Manassa added 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Mitchell Barry contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds. Angok Angok chipped in with 6 points and 7 rebounds.

SUNDAY

VICTORIAN WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (86) defeated Nunawading Spectres (62)

The Victorian Women completed a perfect weekend with an impressive 24-point road victory over Nunawading.

After taking a five-point lead into quarter time, McKinnon broke the game open during a dominant second period. The Cougars scored 27 points in the quarter while holding the Spectres to 14, creating a double-digit lead that they would never surrender.

McKinnon continued to apply scoreboard pressure throughout the second half, maintaining control on both ends of the floor and limiting any chance of a Nunawading comeback.

Kayla Welsh produced a dominant all-round performance with 17 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the Cougars. Holly Miller added 12 points, while Arden Bailey contributed 14 points and 3 rebounds. Maddison Carr finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, helping McKinnon complete a perfect weekend.

YOUTH MEN – McKinnon Cougars (69) defeated by Sunbury Jets (74)

The Youth Men were unable to complete a perfect weekend, falling by five points to Sunbury on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets made the stronger start and led by four points at quarter time before McKinnon responded impressively during the second period. The Cougars outscored Sunbury 23-12 in the quarter to take a seven-point lead into halftime and appeared well placed to secure a second win for the weekend.

Sunbury regained momentum after the break, however, winning both the third and fourth quarters to gradually work back in front. Despite remaining within striking distance throughout the final period, McKinnon was unable to find the late scores required to reclaim the lead.

Joshua Blaikie led the Cougars with 21 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 7-of-11 from the field. Oliver Mann added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas Darcy also scored 14 points, including four made three-pointers. Jake Ansell contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds.
