Strong Performances Highlight Weekend for Cougars
The McKinnon Cougars enjoyed another strong weekend across Big V competition, recording important victories across all divisions.
The Championship Men secured a thrilling two-point victory over Wyndham, while the Youth League One Men produced a second-half comeback to defeat the same opposition. The Youth Championship Women split their double-header, overcoming Altona on Saturday night before falling to ladder leaders Knox on Sunday. The Championship Women completed the weekend with a convincing road win over Sunbury.
SATURDAY
YOUTH MEN – McKinnon Cougars (80) defeated Wyndham (75)
The Youth Men produced a strong second-half comeback to defeat Wyndham by five points at home.
Wyndham controlled much of the opening half and led by four points at quarter time before extending the margin to eight points by the main break. McKinnon responded emphatically after halftime, turning the game on its head with a dominant 27-16 third quarter to claim the lead before holding firm in the final period.
The victory was built on defensive pressure and rebounding, with the Cougars forcing key turnovers and controlling crucial moments late in the contest.
Viv Anderson-Francois led all scorers with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 three-pointers, while Charlie Watts recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jake Ansell added 11 points, while Calvin Rama contributed 7 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.
YOUTH WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (91) defeated Altona Gators (80)
The Youth Women opened their double-header weekend with an impressive road victory over Altona.
The Gators led by two points at quarter time and extended their advantage to four points at halftime, but McKinnon emerged from the main break with renewed energy. The Cougars dominated the third quarter 23-13 before continuing their momentum in the final term to complete an 11-point comeback win.
McKinnon shared the offensive load throughout the contest, with six players scoring eight points or more in a balanced team performance.
Kayla Welsh led the way with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, while Zoe Johnson added 16 points, 4 rebounds and 2 three-pointers. Eloise Leonard contributed 12 points and 7 rebounds, Arden Bailey finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds, and Evie Haywood added 11 points.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (91) defeated Wyndham (89)
The Championship Men secured one of their most exciting victories of the season, holding off Wyndham in a thrilling two-point contest at home.
McKinnon led by two points at quarter time before Wyndham edged ahead during the second quarter. The Cougars regained control after halftime, winning the third period and opening a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Wyndham continued to challenge late, but McKinnon executed in the closing moments to secure an important home victory.
The Cougars shot an efficient 54 per cent from the field and had four players score 12 points or more.
Troyce Manassa starred with 25 points and 5 assists, while Josh McQueen added 23 points and 3 steals. Josh Uhr-Henry recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds, Mitchell Barry contributed 12 points, and Angok Angok added 7 points and 5 rebounds.
SUNDAY
YOUTH WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (66) defeated by Knox Raiders (93)
Backing up less than 24 hours after their win over Altona, the Youth Women were unable to overcome Knox on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders made a fast start and led by six points at quarter time before extending the margin to 18 points by halftime. McKinnon continued to compete throughout the second half but was unable to reduce the deficit against one of the competition's strongest sides.
Holly Miller led the Cougars with 13 points, while Kayla Welsh added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Maddison Carr contributed 11 points, Arden Bailey scored 9 points and 5 rebounds, and Zoe Johnson finished with 11 rebounds and 4 assists.
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (97) defeated Sunbury Jets (78)
The Championship Women capped off the weekend with an impressive 19-point road victory over Sunbury.
The contest was tightly contested throughout the opening half, with McKinnon holding a narrow three-point advantage at the main break. The Cougars then delivered a decisive third-quarter performance, outscoring the Jets 31-11 to break the game open before closing out the victory comfortably.
McKinnon connected on 17 three-pointers and placed five players in double figures as the visitors continued their strong run of form.
Kayce Vaile was outstanding with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Eloise Leonard also scored 22 points, shooting better than 72 per cent from the field and knocking down six three-pointers. Sarae Beveridge added 21 points, Javyn Nicholson contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds, and Amy Baum recorded 8 assists.
