Cougars Split Results Across Five-Game Big V Weekend

The McKinnon Cougars claimed two victories from five Big V fixtures across the weekend, highlighted by a dominant Youth Championship Women performance and an important Championship Women road win.

The Youth Championship Women produced one of their best performances of the season with a 28-point victory over Ringwood, while the Championship Women opened their double-header with a hard-fought win over Western Port before falling to fellow title contenders Sherbrooke on Sunday. The Championship Men suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat to RMIT University, while the Youth League One Men were unable to overcome Ballarat.

SATURDAY

YOUTH WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (97) defeated Ringwood Hawks (69)

The Youth Championship Women delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, defeating Ringwood by 28 points on the road.

McKinnon led by six points at quarter time before extending the margin to 11 by halftime. The Cougars then broke the game open with a dominant 33-point third quarter, putting the result beyond doubt before comfortably closing out the contest.

The visitors shot an impressive 49.3 per cent from the field, knocked down 14 three-pointers and finished with 26 assists in a clinical offensive display.

Arden Bailey led the way with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, while Zoe Johnson added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Holly Miller contributed 14 points, 6 assists and 2 steals, Natalie Keane scored 12 points, and Kayla Welsh finished with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (75) defeated Western Port Steelers (71)

The Championship Women secured an important road victory, overcoming Western Port by four points.

After trailing by two points at quarter time, McKinnon responded by winning both the second and third periods to build an 11-point advantage entering the final quarter. The Steelers mounted a late comeback, but the Cougars held their nerve to secure another valuable win.

McKinnon dominated the glass throughout the contest, outrebounding Western Port 49-37, including 16 offensive rebounds that created crucial second-chance opportunities.

Katherine Vaile was outstanding with 15 points and a remarkable 21 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Romy Price scored a game-high 19 points, while Javyn Nicholson added 18 points and 7 rebounds. Maighan Hedge chipped in with 13 points, and Amy Baum recorded 7 assists.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (74) defeated by RMIT University (75)

The Championship Men fell just short in one of the closest games of the round, losing to RMIT University by a single point.

McKinnon recovered from an early deficit to take a four-point lead into halftime before the Redbacks edged in front during the third quarter. The Cougars continued to fight until the final possession but were unable to find the winning basket.

Despite the result, McKinnon controlled the rebounding battle and had three players score in double figures in another strong all-round team performance.

Mitchell Barry led the scoring with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Josh Uhr-Henry recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Troyce Manassa filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.

SUNDAY

YOUTH MEN – McKinnon Cougars (48) defeated by Ballarat Miners (70)

The Youth League One Men were unable to finish the weekend on a winning note, going down to Ballarat by 22 points.

McKinnon led by three points after the opening quarter before the Miners seized control through the middle stages of the game. Ballarat outscored the Cougars 44-20 across the second and third quarters to establish a decisive advantage before closing out the victory.

Charlie Watts battled strongly with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Joshua Blaikie added 7 points and 3 assists, while Tyler Langston contributed 6 points and 2 steals.

CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (66) defeated by Sherbrooke Suns (91)

Backing up less than 24 hours after Saturday night's victory, the Championship Women were unable to overcome fellow title contenders Sherbrooke.

The Suns made a fast start to lead by nine points at quarter time before extending the margin to 13 at the main break. McKinnon continued to compete throughout the second half but was unable to close the gap against one of the competition's strongest teams.

Sarae Beveridge led the Cougars with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Amy Baum added 14 points, while Javyn Nicholson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Annabel Fitter also finished in double figures with 11 points off the bench.

Despite the loss, the Championship Women remain among the competition's leading sides as they continue their pursuit of the Big V Championship title.
