Cougars Claim Road Double as Championship Sides Win at Warrandyte
The McKinnon Cougars were on the road across Sunday’s Big V action, with both Championship sides collecting important wins over Warrandyte Venom, while the Youth Women were tested by Sandringham. With the Youth Men on the bye, McKinnon finished the day with two valuable senior victories from three away fixtures.
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (79) defeated Warrandyte Venom (71)
The Championship Women opened the weekend with an important eight-point road win, overcoming Warrandyte in a hard-fought contest at Mullum Mullum Stadium.
Emily Suckling led the way with 21 points, knocking down six triples in another strong offensive display. Katherine Vaile added 18 points and 9 rebounds, providing a major interior presence, while Sarae Beveridge contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds.
Teams were tied at half-time but the Cougars responded with a composed second half, winning the final quarter to close out the contest. The Cougars found their rhythm late and executed when it mattered most to secure the road win.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN – McKinnon Cougars (92) defeated Warrandyte Venom (85)
The Championship Men completed the Championship teams road double, grinding out a seven-point win over Warrandyte to close the weekend.
Josh McQueen led the way with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting, continuing his strong start to the season. Kierell Green added 16 points and 10 rebounds for another double-double, while Mitchell Barry contributed 12 points, including three made triples.
McKinnon controlled the middle stages of the contest and held their composure late, with strong inside work and efficient scoring helping the Cougars close out an important road result.
YOUTH WOMEN – McKinnon Cougars (68) lost to Sandringham Sabres (80)
The Youth Women were unable to claim the road win, falling to Sandringham by 12 points on Sunday afternoon.
Arden Bailey led the way with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals in a strong two-way performance, while Zoe Johnson added 11 points and 9 rebounds as McKinnon stayed competitive throughout the afternoon. Evie Haywood also provided a valuable spark with 11 points off the bench.
McKinnon stayed within reach across the opening three quarters, but Sandringham’s second-quarter surge proved difficult to recover from. The Cougars continued to compete late, but were unable to close the margin.
