Injury to International Honour: Trinity Vakacavu Co-Captains Fiji at FIBA U17 Oceania Cup

McKinnon Cougars youth guard Trinity Vakacavu’s return to the court this year has been defined by far more than basketball alone, completing her comeback from an ACL injury on the international stage while representing Fiji at the FIBA U17 Women’s Oceania Cup in Samoa.

After spending a full year in rehabilitation, Vakacavu returned to competition wearing the Fiji jersey for the first time, earning co-captaincy honours and helping guide the team to a fifth-place finish against some of Oceania’s strongest junior programs.

“It was just a dream come true,” Vakacavu said. “Ever since i was young i have always wanted to wear a Fiji jersey, represent my Dad’s country and just make my family proud.”

The tournament marked her first competitive basketball since suffering an ACL injury, adding an emotional layer to the experience.

“The experience was extra special to me, since it was the first basketball game I had played after a whole year off, coming back from my ACL injury,” she said. “I was completely overwhelmed by so many emotions, then they named me ‘co-captain’. Mild panic attack, excitement, pride, nerves. I am just so grateful for the experience - GOD IS GOOD!”

Across the week, Vakacavu was challenged by the standard of opposition and the opportunity to test her game against some of the region’s best young athletes.

“I honestly learned that I still have a long way to go with my basketball,” she said. “Going up against the Australian team was an experience. Their players play with such poise. It is obvious they are well trained.”

The tournament also became a confidence-building moment offensively, as Vakacavu leaned into areas of her game she is continuing to develop.

“For my own game. I tried something new. I put up shots,” she said. “I have always been confident in my defence and drives but not shooting. So my focus going forwards is to practice my shooting and take the shot!”

Off the court, Vakacavu praised the resilience and unity of the Fijian group throughout a demanding tournament.

“The group was just a beautiful bunch of gorgeous girls,” she said. “After every loss we would hug it out and cry together. Then bounce straight back and discuss honestly what we needed to work on to be prepared for the next game.”

“My team’s resilience showed in our ability to turn our disappointment into our motivation,” she added. “We lifted each other up always, and Fijians never give up, we keep fighting no matter the score.”

Now back with the McKinnon Cougars, Vakacavu says the international experience and her journey back from injury has reaffirmed her passion for the game and sharpened her focus for the season ahead.

“This experience assured me that basketball is a sport I want to keep playing, thriving and growing in,” she said. “It was a hard year with my ACL recovery and now I am ready to help our youth squad win another ring. YTG, UP THE COUGSSS”
