Reminder: MBA Domestic Competitions Fill-In Player Eligibility
McKinnon Basketball would like to remind all clubs, team managers and families of the MBA Fill-In Player rules outlined in the MBA Domestic Competition By-Laws. These rules, by-laws and guidelines ensure fairness, consistency and smooth game-day operations across all domestic competitions.
All rules are taken from By-Law 6 and Appendix 1 & 1.2 of the MBA Domestic Competition By-Laws.
Fill-In Player Requirements
Fill-In and Emergency Players must not play under another player’s name. Details must be correctly entered in PlayHQ either prior to the game or courtside prior to tip-off. Any team breaching this rule will forfeit the match.
Players are not permitted to fill in for a team within their own division. All fill-ins must come from a lower division in the same age group or from a younger age group.
Fill-ins can only be used to bring a team to a maximum of six players (seven for Open and Senior competitions). If a sixth registered player arrives late, the fill-in must sit out for the remainder of the match. Only players participating in the game are to be added to the PlayHQ line-up court side.
Fill-In Players may only fill in three times per season. After three games for a particular team in that age group, a player cannot fill in for any other team in that age group.
Emergency Players may only play two games per year and must come from a younger age group (U12–U20). These players can only be used by senior or independent teams.
Any team using an ineligible fill-in will be given a forfeit loss.
Age Group and Division Eligibility
U20 players (all divisions) are eligible to fill in for Open Age teams (all divisions).
Open and Senior teams may only use fill-ins from a lower division. For Over 30s and Over 35s competitions, all fill-ins must meet the required age criteria.
Open players must be over 16 years of age to take the court.
Important Notes
Fill-in players must be registered within the same club.
All fill-in rules must be followed exactly as outlined in the MBA Domestic Competition By-Laws, and teams are responsible for ensuring player eligibility before taking the court. Full details are available in By-Law 6 and Appendix 1 & 1.2 of the MBA Domestic Competition By-Laws.
If you require clarification regarding fill-in eligibility, please contact your club, or the MBA Competitions Team.
